Everett, WA USA
Lack of a wheelchair ramp can itself be a barrier to participation in the community. Some people are, in effect, kept prisoners in their own homes. Frequently, a rehab patient has a problem going home because of lack of resources to build a ramp.
Both Everett and Snohomish County Housing Authorities have home loan programs so homeowners can make needed changes. There are no on-going programs available for renters. The DRC Wheelchair Ramp Program addresses this gap.

Our Wheelchair Ramp Program will provide access and freedom of movement to wheelchair-users in Snohomish County who need a ramp, especially those recently injured or incapacitated. Ramps will be provided free, or for the cost of materials for those who can afford to pay.
Ramps will be built of high-quality, outdoor-grade materials. They will be waterproofed and surfaced for safety. Volunteers will construct ramps according to standards.

Independent living means having the opportunity to make decisions about things that affect your life. This includes:
- finding a good place to live
- learning how to manage the help you may need from others
- finding and using financial resources to accomplish your goals
- learning new skills
Services are provided by people with disabilities and Independent Living Centers are governed by people with disabilities. The DRC operates under the umbrella of the Washington Coalition of Citizens with disABILITIES, a Washington non-profit. Donations to this program are welcome and are tax-deductible.
Wheelchair users living in Snohomish County or their advocates may call the disAbility Resource Center at (425) 347-5768 to apply for a ramp. Priority will be given to individuals in rehab facilities, minorities and those in rural areas.
Recipients will be asked to reimburse the cost of materials if they are able. If not, ramps will be built at no cost. Ramps are built by volunteers, and the timing depends on their availability.
